Anyone ever had any successful herbal treatment of Giardia? I am currently taking Black Walnut drops and have heard that Wormwood is effective in killing the parasite. Also, since nothing is settling in my stomach, what kind've diet is necessary in batlling this? I have also been considering taking an anti biotic to help kill this ASAP. HELP!

I dont know much about giardia treatment in general, but make sure you are hydrated if you have diahreea and I hear that Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) can help tremendously. Take care.

Giardia's an intestinal parasite, similar to the amoeba - if left unchecked, it can lead to dysentery, which is not fun... Garlic might help... a decoction of pomegranate rinds (it has a lot of tannic acid, tho, so if your stomach is ALREADY upset, this probably would only make it worse), barberry (Berberis spp.) extract (berberine, also found in goldenseal) has shown to be effective against giardia in clinical trials (the berberine is highest in the stems, root bark & berries), as has syrup of ipecac (which is also an emetic - makes you toss your cookies).

    Here's a decent barberry link: www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsH...rberrych.html

Black walnut & wormseed are probably not doing anything for you except upsetting your stomach - they're for worms, not bacteria.

I agree with Janelle - raw Garlic or Berberis vulgaris (Barberry) would be excellent, Myrrh tincture may be useful as well.
Ginger, Peppermint/ Chamomile to soothe the stomach and digestive tract in general, to help with sickness/ nausea and spasms.

i suggest a full parasite cleanse followed by a colon cleanse.

a really effective herbal parasite killer:
    www.mhdewormer.com/dewormer2.html

since they are toughies i would suggest that you use that.

there are various types of colon cleanses.

    master cleanse (the lemonade diet)
is the one that i am most familiar with

Black Walnut and Wormwood will not help in treating Giardia.
Oregon Grape (or Golden Seal in a pinch) and Grape Fruit Sedd Extract will kill the little buggers and stop the diarrhea.

Antibiotics don't help against Giardia, since it is not a bacterium Giardia cells are basically like your own body cells, and the only "Western" medicine that is used is normally Flagyl (Metronidazol), which acts like chemotherapy, and has really nasty side effects. The best thing with Giardia is normally to sit the infection out - the main thing goes away after 3-4 weeks, unless your immune system is really down. Once you're over it you'll have some Giardia left in your system, and your next infection will be less severe. You should take a Vitamin/Mineral supplement though, since Giardia can really limit your Mineral/Vitamin uptake.

Just wanted to add in re: to another post asking about it, another name for Giardia is "Beaver Fever" because it's so easy to get by contaminated water, one way is by swimming in areas where lots of beavers live and poo. But other animals will carry it & leave in water.

drinking your own urine for several days.is an old folkremedy.just avoid the first few seconds and last coupla seconds as this is where the salts and oils are.it sounds gross but it should work.
whatever you do drink plenty of watere and electrolytes.

      Oh Giardia... ugggghhhhh!!

I have read a TON of information as well as talked extensively with several medical proffessionals (ND, MD, LAC's etc) I am currently a pre-med student and also a LMT, so I also have some basic body knowledge as well.

I had Giardia 7 years ago and tried both herbal remedies and eventually had to use the antibiotics (Flagell). You will get many many different opinions on this topic. I am still restoring my digestive system - 7 years later - which was severely altered by this parasite and I know many others in the same boat (in 20% of the population who catch giardia, it can become a chronic condition). I am a healthy person with a strong immune system in all other areas. I highly recommend you take the flagell (and NO I am not a big supporter of antibiotics, but in this case it might save your gut) IF you are not fully recovering within a couple weeks as the damage incured in your small intestine (long term) by this parasite can be severe if untreated. I have more information for you if you wish to contact me in person.

      Good luck
      Be well
      I really feel for you!
