help for any necrotic spider bite:

day 4 and everything I did worked great -
no redness or swelling any more, a lot less blistering, and lots less crazy-hurty-itching...and thankfully no flesh rot!

my recommendations (after 20+ years of gardening and getting too many necrotic spider bites, and trying many different ways to help myself):

•NO SCRATCHING!! I think this is how people get really bad infected open wounds - and yes, a test of your will!
•Aztec Secret clay+activated charcoal+apple cider vinegar = poultice, asap and often, to localize toxins/venom
•cool compresses of water+epson salts, to remove clay and keep circulation to bite
•Ledum Palustre 30C (homeopathic insect bite remedy) asap for 3 days
•Traumed (aka Traumeel) homeopathic anti-inflammatory cream a few times around -not on- the bite for the first 2 days

It is not surprising that he knew nothing of the bite until later . I was working on Robins AFB / Warner Robins Ga. when a friend of mine showed me a spot on his shoulder that looked sort of like a buckeye nut . He went to the military Dr. and was told that he had a recluse bite and that the recluse bite is seldom felt because of something that numbs the bite . He was given a series of shots (3) over a period of a few days and had no problems ., not even a scar .

Are you sur eyou know what bit you?

Secondly th esize of you rpalm is a large area.. you need to take something to reduc eswelling and also to prevent infection.. whether vitamin C or golden seal or echinacea. Also comfrey poultice migh twork.

However so far you hae used 2 pooultices and you have itchy swollen area. I also suggest resting, keeping it uncovered, not looking at it every 15 minutes.. giving the area tiem to reduce while youare takign a good amount of internal anti-infection whatever you choose.

Be at peace

3 days ago I got a nasty hobo spider bite (or series of bites rather) and have used a clay+charcoal+acvinegar poultice to try to hopefully keep the impending flesh rot away aaaahhhhh it is now a blistery itchy painful mound on the back of my thigh that is the size of my palm. I tried the papaya slice and all that happened is that is made the thing freaking itch and sting like crazy - I would NOT recommend it!!! ow ow ow!

homeopathic ledum palustre is also something I've been taking for 2 days; apis mellifica was recommended to me, but it made my fingers numb and tingly so I stopped using it.

I'll post again with photos and progress...

I have heard that some people use Hyperbaric oxygen therapy / hyperbaric chambers to treat Brown recluse spider bites. It is the same type of chamber used for divers. It is well known to also treat cancer among other things. Fills your body and cells with oxygen.

I am allergic to many types of insect bites and stings. I have found the best thing is to apply a poultice of papaya enzyme immediately upon being stung. You can grind up papaya enzyme pills and mix with water, or you can use Adolf's Meat Tenderizer [main ingredient is papaya enzyme]. I had very good luck with plantain on a bee sting on my foot that was swollen and had red streaks. The plaintain completely cleared it up in a couple of days. I did not have such a good experience with plantain on a bee sting on my hand. I seemed to have an allergic reaction to the plantain [in addition to the bee sting]. If you are out in the woods, grab some clay and mix with water and put on it immediately. Can't find clay? Grab some dirt and make a mud pie and slather it on. It isn't as good as any of the above, but much better than nothing. Mashed up comfrey applied to any wound that doesn't want to heal helps immensely.

my partner used tobacco on a brown recluse bite on his young daughter. i think he made a mini-poultice by wrapping some tobacco in a tissue, had her spit on it and applied that with some pressure to the bite. this was within a few minutes probably of being bitten but it definitely "handled" it and i'm sure he swears that her spit was an important part of the remedy.

topical as a spit poultice and internally... and yes I have used it... it does work best if used immediately... but I have used it after the fact as well, combined with larrea and yarrow, in fact i have used it for both terribly infected tick bites as well as scorpion and brown recluse venom... overnight poultices covered with gauze and taped on seem to work best after initial treatment of spit poultices changed ecery half hour...

being way out in the mountains here in the sw i have treated a fair number of venomous bites of varying sorts, not rattlesnake bites just yet thank goodness....

Plantain is very good for blood poisoning of various types, but in all cases it must be applied to the bite VERY quickly, and it must be replaced every 15 to 30 minutes. In the meanwhile, get the person to a hospital. The area might have to be debrided.

In order to get venom from a spider, you have to sedate the spider and shock it with an electrode. Time-consuming and impractical since very little venom is produced. Spider venom isn't at all like bee or snake venom, I don't think it's one that lends itself well to antivenin production, though I'd have to ask some of my more learned friends on the international arachnid forum, I know at least two are toxicologists.

Not every bite from a hobo spider or recluse will necrotize, there is some suspicion that factors such as the cleanliness of the spider's surroundings and the health of the person bitten may influence how a bite heals. I know for a fact that I was bitten by a hobo spider (I saw it right after it bit me). I took some Benadryl to counter the allergic response to the envenomation, then started drinking water, washed the bite area well, and applied Neosporin and tea tree oil. It was tender for a few days, but then healed up as any other insect bite would. I supplemented my diet with echinacea/goldenseal, zinc, and vitamin C, plus kept up the antihistamines and extra fluids.

this is what I am talking about. Yes I have used the "liu shen wan" treatment on spider bites successfully. People do not understand that IT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR YEARS. There is another treatment that I have not tried that involves cauterizing over a slice of garlic. It causes a large yellow pustule to appear which is drained.

a very good herb for drawing poisons,splinters,glass...you name it from the body..and easily acquired..is tobacco
tobacco poultice will draw out the toxin but only if applied immediately after the initial bite

I think every pharmacy and hospital should have anti-venom stocked and available. A victim could have mere minutes to treat a bite before they lose tissue, etc. It's unconscionable that I can't find evidence of anti-venom being available everywhere healthcare is available.

I realize this is an old post and other's have already said this but PLANTAIN!

It's nearly everywhere and it's incredibly effective for all kinds of venomous bites and stings... if I think it needs an extra boost I add yarrow and larrea (creasote bush) and maybe peach leaf, but really, Plantain is the supreme herb for this problem.

The most effective treatment for spider bite I have ever witnessed is the chinese pill "Liu Shen Wan" ten tiny pills are dissolved in vinagar and applied to the bite. even chronic effects are resolved quickly. This can be found at Chinese herb stores which are everywhere around Canada.

First off, American tarantulas are not dangerously venomous, only a few species of Australian tarantula can deliver a deadly bite to a human. A tarantula bite hurts, but it's not going to kill you. Our only native medically significant spiders are the brown recluse, the widows, and the hobo spiders (Tegenaria species). Definitely seek medical attention if the bite is serious. I've heard good things about packing medical sulfur into bites that are trying to necrotize. For minor bites I use a mixture of neosporin and tea tree oil.

I've been keeping spiders for almost 15 years (I've even rescued a Phoneutria sp. from a frantic produce department and had it for about a year after I caught it in a deli cup); trust me, spiders are way more afraid of you than you are of them. They're surprisingly fragile and very susceptible to environmental toxins.

All of our significant native spiders have spread with increased travel and thrived because they live close to humans since we attract a lot of lovely things for them to eat like flies and roaches. Be aware of where you're putting your hands, especially in storage spaces, educate yourself about their habits, and don't buy into all of the fear about them. Just my two cents, but spiders are actually really neat creatures, that's why I have 20 of them. :D

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned charcoal (or maybe I didn't read carefully enough) but that the first thing I'd do. open a capsule, add a little water and apply the paste over the bite. It's first line of treatment at many hospitals, too, but you can save yourself the time and trouble.

Damn hobo is what gets people on the west coast and people SWEAR it is the brown recluse. Hobo spider, look it up so that you can stay away.

When I lived in Ashland, I found a black widow in my house. I put her in a jar and poked holes in the lid because I wanted my roommates to see it. The same night that I did that, I got three spider bites, not BW, I dont' know what kind, but I just figured she had told her arachnid buddies to put the fear of spiders in me. The next day, I told her to tell all her spider friends to be cool and not bite the humans, and I took her far away from the house and let her go. I didn't get anymore spider bites at that house. I know that a lot of people just kill spiders. I catch and release them away from the house. I HATE flies and mosquitoes, so I encourage them to eat heartily of the pest insects as I let them go.

I would try a goldenseal salve if I got a spider bite, because that's what I have on hand.

Yes, You'll need a doctors perscription to get them. That may be a problem because it's not the medically recognized treatment. But if you search around, perhaps by writing the doc who started the nitro treatment, you should find someone who will give you the Rx.

And it's only for the brown recluse bite. Won't work or help at all for other types. Oh, and you and anyone who touches you may test positive at airport screenings for nitro. Happened to me when a patient of mine, whos husband was using nitro patches, used my computer. Almost had a bomb squad dispose of my computer. Fortunately didin't get that far.

And I used to keep tarantulas and I had black widows in my house, they never bothered me. I knew they were poisonous, but most spiders don`t like people and will not attack us. Widows will leave us alone unless we go looking for trouble (or accidently find thier nests I suposse)

Spiders that chase things, that`s just not cool! What does a critter that small need a venom that poisonous for anyway? They can`t possibly eat us, we are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too big!!

That is a cool site, although I wouldn`t want to be that close to count it`s eyes to tell if it is a brown recluse. A

lso, the web site says they live in south central United States. I know they live up north here in Canada as well. They are all over southern Alberta. Maybe it`s because Alberta (the south anyway) is a large grassland and desert area, much the same as the southern US, but they are not limited to that specific region. Just thought you might like to know.

Plantago major.. planatain.. it pulls poison and was used by the indiginous ppls here in Montana as a successful remedy against rattlesnake bites as well as many other bites.

I have used it against hornets stings where I was bitten and had an immediate reaction to the sting (and 4 bites) The hornet stung me right on the vein of the inside of my right knee. It swelled instantly (within seconds) and grew a red line that begin trailing on both sides of the bite.

I drove a short distance from where I was to my house and fell out of the car... where I began picking plantain out of the grass, chewing it up and applying it as a poltice to the bite..

I did this for a while.. bout 4 hours.. ( after a while I stopped chewing it and just crushed the fresh leaves applying it directly to the bite)

I never had to go to the hospital (against my husbands wishes) and was completly cured of the poison within a day or two.. It had drawn all the poison out..

It would have taken less time except that the poison had went directly into the blood stream via the vein..

Plantain or Clay can be used to draw the poison out immediately...Anti-Inflamatories should be used topicly, and immune system boosting herbs and anti-oxidants should be used internaly.....

Thanks you guys!!!

I of course searched and got alot of info too! He was bit in Georgia on his way back here (BC Canada) and did not realize it until he was here. It was over a week. At first he thought it was mosquito bite, but then it grew and grew.... he has been in the hospital since Thursday.

What I learned is if you go to a doctor, he or she will probably give you antibiotics. While this is recommended because infection will almost always be present in the spider bite, the treatment is worthless at stopping the spreading of the chemical reaction and it will not stop any possible gangrene.

Besides replenishing your body with live Enzymes and Tissue/Cell rebuilding foods, a natural cure for the brown recluse bite is a combination of essential oils of oregano, clove, Melissa, rosemary, rose otto, bentonite clays and electrical current.

Other healing remedies for brown recluse spider bites are: MSM (internally and externally), high dose vitamin C (internally and externally), charcoal compresses (external only) and plantain poultices (external only several times a day for 20 minutes at a time). I have also seen mention of colloidal silver, however, since the problem with a brown recluse spider bite is chemical, and because colloidal silver works because of electrical issues (e.g. it does work on skin cancer), I have not yet convinced myself how this could work on spider bites.

Thanks for all of your support!!

Peace*

This is one of the scariest spiders because it's fast, deadly, and really aggressive. It'll chase people down and then bit them just because it can.

I personaly wouldnt trust homeopathy for something as potent as a spider bite.

There are several plants that can be used as a poultice to draw out the poison, though I wouldnt realy do too much of anything untill checking in with the doctors and letting them administer the Anti-venom...you dont want cross interactions....maybe in this case homeopathy is the safest bet, despite being less effective.

I would let the doctors take it from here, though if you were in the woods or the dessert with no access to a doctor there are certainly makeshift natural remidies that can save your life.

One of the best remedies I've heard of for Brown Recluse bites is a nitroglycerine patch directly on the area of the bite. Google it and you'll get some interesting info. The Nitroglycerine keeps the blood vessels from closing down and helps keep the tissue from dying, which is the biggest problem with brown recluse venom. It'll take an open minded MD though.
