Child throwing up mysteriously

My son, for the past two nights, has thrown up in the middle of the night. He normally has a constitution of an ox, he is the healthiest of my three, seemingly. The best eater, nothing I know of has ever really bothered him and he does not have any dairy allergy.

However, I don't give my kids a lot of dairy. We drink Rice Milk. Our dairy consists of occasional cheese and yogurt. Lately I was thinking about how yogurt is good for our digestive system, I was also thinking about what I could do to make my children's diet healthier. They never eat fast food and pretty much no dairy. But other than that, they don't eat great. Too much sugar. So recently I cut out all sweets except what I top oatmeal off with, which is a bit of organic brown.

Coincidentally, the last two nights, I've introduced a new meal. Plain yogurt with lots of fresh cut fruit and a bit of honey. I was thinking that the Yogurt would be great to get the kids digestive systems back in the right spot. I figured the natural sugar wouldn't be too bad because there is NO way they'll eat plain yogurt without anything added. I even admit, it's pretty sour tasting.

Can you give me some ideas as to why such a strong tummy might be rejecting plain yogurt when it digests "Trix" yogurt no prob? I'm thinking that Trix yogurt is so chuck full of sugar that those cultures prob don't actually do much for the body.

Another intersting bit is that what he eats after he eats the Yogurt isn't fully digesting. He's throwing up intact food that's been in his system for hours. It's only partially digested. It seems like I can make out what he's eaten only since he's eaten the Yogurt.

I'm not sure this is *bad*. Part of me wonders if he's detoxing. . *or* maybe the Yogurt's gone rancid before it's spoil date... I dunno. Help me out here.

This is really difficult to figure out from an email.
    It isn't necessarily the yogurt.
I would ease healthy food into your children's diet.
And instead of sugar on breakfast food, use honey.
Dairy is the most healthy way for your children to get calcium etc.
I would suggest looking into offering your children raw milk dairy products and learning to
    make your own yogurt.
    Many blessings, Julie

Please be careful with raw milk products. I work as an environmental microbiologist. My job is to test drinking water and milk. We test raw milk producers on a regular basis. Bacteria counts can be astronomical in raw milk. (aerobic and coliform). We're talking hundreds of thousands of colonies per milliliter. Sometimes more than a million. White blood cell counts can also be quite high in raw milk too, indicating mastitis in the cow. In my state, it is illegal to sell raw milk products. People do try and get around it by forming "co-ops" where they are buying a share of the cow, rather than the milk. I'm not saying all raw milk is poison, but some of it is loaded with bacteria. Some bacteria are good, but I personally wouldn't risk it.

      Thanks Julie : )

      Hi Steve,

No pain at all. No fever, no nothing. Just throwing up in the middle of the night, and only once each night for the past two nights. It's not like a Flu at all. He didn't even get me the first night, he threw up and went back to bed. I asked him to come and wake me up when these things happen and he did last night but just to tell me. He was fine.

He's been more than normal and he really never gets sick. He's a very healthy and stocky 6 year old. Can't figure out what the deal is here. Maybe the Yogurt's just bad but I ate some of it and I was ok, granted I didn't eat as much as him. He had a huge bowl of Yogurt and fruit with a bit of honey.

I don't think he's ever been sick for more than a day or two tops and he comes down with a cold or flu maybe once a year. Like I said, he's healthy right now except for throwing up thing. Perfectly normal. He's not even congested at all.

The one thing I was hoping that it wasn't was some sort of parasite but that doesn't seem to fit the bill here. He's heavier than most kids and healthier. He's def the stockiest of my three boys.

sounds like he is not digesting the food. try not giving him raw things for a little bit, and see how he does. he needs to build up his natural enzymes, which seem to not be present, when digesting food. raw food, dairy derivatives, can aggravate the stomach lining. keep him off the fruit and such for a couple days, give him well-cooked rice and cooked veggies, see how he does. then ease him back onto the yogurt. i hope this is somewhat helpful.

I have no ideas for you; I just wanted to reassure you that this has happened with both my kids at one point or another during that age range--a few nights of vomiting with no sign that anything else is wrong, feeling fine otherwise, no idea what was causing it. It stopped as abruptly as it started, and we never figured out what was wrong.
        Kids are weird.
        :-)
hope things work out all right!

Sometimes it is'nt the food but a virus...
and even they can be intolerant to certain fruits as well...

Why not try agave syrup or barley rice malt for sweetening? They keep the blood sugar leve;s balanced unlike even honey...

Just make sure he is eliminating well too. Not sure if lactose intolerance would make you vomit.

              Dianne,

I wondered if he might be so stopped up that the food is hitting a digestive "wall" and reversing back up to eliminate. .? I started giving him mineral oil again today just to make sure.

2 years ago he was so stopped up. The Xray taken of his belly showed stool filled to the top of his tummy. I'm guessing that might have something to do with it because again last night, he threw up. It's happening at about 2:45-3am every morning. It's strange that it's the same time every night.

Hopefully the mineral oil will help. If not, I'll need to get him professionally seen because this is kind of strange. Someone made a comment earlier about this sort of thing happeing occasionally with kids and I TOTALLY agree. Their systems go through such rapid changes. Just want to make sure this passes healthily and is not a sign of some deeper issue. .

I dont think its the yougurt either...i would think the fruits. fruits are used to cleanse the body and if you have increased those too much youmay have a cleansing effect. Yogurt produces healthy probiotics which our bodies actually need to balance out bacteria in the body.
Also radical change like that should be done in smaller amounts...mixing the food 1/2 and 1/2.

There is also a horrible stomach virus going around which has reached pandemic proportions...it isnt the flu, but our little guy was doing the same thing for about 2 weeks off and on...throwing up around the same time as your little guy.

Try some sweetgrass tea if you can find any available...or chamomile...seetgrass will settle that right down.

      Nanc,

It just hit me today. It's not a constant, knock you out stomach flu. . . But it's a longer, more drawn flu out and the tummy is sore for longer. I have been pretty sick today and here's the thing... When Caleb threw up, there was a very distinct odor, not a generic smell, but distinct. I have the same smell so it's got to be a viral or bacterial thing.

Even though my body isn't too happy today, I feel better knowing that Caleb's not sick on another level.

Thank You for all your help and awareness! Any ideas on very very easy foods or teas I can drink to soothe the cramping?

Oh... never mind you already made some suggestiong : ) Sweetgrass! I'm def going to be looking for that. I have some Chamomile, just didn't know if that would be the right thing. I ate oatmeal and my tummy cramped for about 3 hours before I finally gave it back. I've just been eating Vit C tabs which I know can make the cramping worse however it's really worked to ease whatever was blocked and got me moving abit so I wasn't in bed cramping with no end. I feel better after eating it. So far I've taken about 3-4000 mg.

Maybe I can have some tea now : )

Try some overcooked white rice...make it very starchy. Sometimes I mix that with overcooked spincach. Soothes my tummy when it's like that. You could also try milk toast.
My Grandmother used to give us that. Lightly toast some white bread and butter it. Pour scalded milk over it. But I would try the overcooked rice and spinach first...way less fat.

Just wondering did it smell like beer? Our Grandbaby had something similar that hung on for weeks off and on. He would be fine oneday and fever and throwing up the next. We noticed that the smell was very strong and almost smelled like beer...very yeasty.

          Nancy!!!!

I almost wrote that it smelled very yeasty! It's so distinct, not just like vomit. I thought it smelled like bread... not good smelling however. If you soaked bread with beer and let it sit for days, that's probably what it would smell something like.

I think I've got whatever this strange virus is.

Mass, so it's not something remotely local. Hmmmm. Viral. It's pretty wicked. I'll keep in touch and let you know what happens with Caleb, please do the same with your little one.

He went through his first night last night, not throwing up at all. I'm going to give him a good amount of Yogurt daily to help fight the side effects of Yeast in the tummy.

He just spent 2 weeks being well...now sick again...Dr's cant find out what it is..every test so far has been negative except blod which showed his WBC to be 36,000. Still waiting blood cultures and Dr. so mystified he was tihnking of doing an injected dye scan if this medication hadnt worked. Thankfully it has brought his fever down, but not out of the woods yet.

smells like candidiasis. you already know what i think you should do :)

              Steve,

Candidaisis builds up over time, doesn't it? I don't think that's what this is. I'm sure it has something to do with Yeast, BUT I don't think it's Candidaisis.

I started eating a bunch of Yogurt and ever since I've been feeling better. Caleb, the middle whom I wrote this about initially, had been sick with the same smell about 3 weeks ago but it was more aggressive. He threw up all night, similar to what I've been doing. Then, 3 weeks later he gets this middle of the night thing.

I really think that Yogurt might help. I'm ready to injest some CS if this is the kind of thing that just won't go away.

I think the worst thing for this would be anti-biotics... I have a strong feeling that would be really really bad.

I'm going to stay away from anything yeasty, I'll prob try a lot of Raw foods or at the very least, lightly cooked ones while my tummy is still crook.

The Vit C has been helping to move things through. This morning, I was just stopped and cramping without any end. The C will also help to kill the Bacteria.

              Steve,

I'll bet that whatever this bug is, it'll lead to Candidiasis if it's not corrected! I'm almost sure it's a Virus b/c my neighbor caught the same thing and he had the same weird smell that accompanies this illness. Thing is, people are drinking their fruit juice and "get well" sprite and it's making things a lot worse. On top of eating bread b/c that's what almost everyone does when they throw up, the first thing they go for, that they think they can keep down, is bread.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if some people really needed CS here. I'd just be careful to make sure they put the good bacteria back in : )

This is interesting to me - we're in Alabama and the same thing's happening here.

We all, one after another, caught a tummy bug but for the rest of us, it was a couple times of vomiting (for the baby exactly 24 hours) and then several days of just ickiness - upset tummies, fatigue, etc.

But our daughter (3) has been waking up every single night, the same time, throwing up just once a huge amount of undigested food - her lunch, snacks and dinner. I've been making bland things for her - crackers, mac n cheese, turkey sandwich.

I'll have to pay attention to see if it smells like beer - it does have an odd smell...I wonder if that's it.

    How's Caleb?

Caleb's better these days and he's digesting his food again. I started having him eat Plain Vanilla Yogurt and that has really seemed to help. I caught the same thing he had and the Yogurt helped me as well. Caleb hasn't gotten sick again. I've cut out almost all sugar except naturally occurring sugars in food. When I look back, about 2 months ago, my littlest had the same thing. He got over it really quickly because he doesn't eat a whole lot to begin with, he's lactose intolerant so there's nothing there that will bother him and he likes very simple foods. He never threw up after the initial bout he had, however he did have a hard time beginning to fully digest the food he was passing. Think he spent about a week passing partially digested foods before he got back to normal.

What got rid of the gasiness with me was a mixture of Raw, Unfiltered Honey & High Grade Organic Cinnamon mixed with very hot (but not boiling) water, in the morning before I ate anything and then again in the evening 30 minutes before bedtime. I took this when I was dropping weight, it greatly helped to detoxify my body, keep my weight down AND I noticed that it cleared any digestive issues I was having. ( it also naturally corrects insulin levels for people who are borderline diabetic and it helps people with diabetes to stay off medication)
It doesn't taste great because the amount of Cinnamon you put into the drink is much more than what you're used to tasting, it's a bit pungent.

1 to 1/2 Tb of Cin
      tsp Honey
      8 oz hot water

You could even give this to your daughter if she doesn't have any issues w allergy. I'd cut everything by 1/2 - 3/4ths. That will help if she's gassy and crampy, it'll also boost her immune system and kill unfriendly bacteria in her gut. If she'll eat the Yogurt, I'd give her that to.

Also, if she has what we have, it's going to be harder for her body to get rid of it if she's eating anything that helps Yeast grow. (bread, crackers. . ) Try to give her simple whole grains like rice & oatmeal. . veggies and a small bit of fruit.

It'll take a day to two before your efforts w diet pay off. Took me a bit to get what was happening w my family but once we figured it out, fixing it wasn't too hard. However, if I'd have given myself or my kids traditional "throw up foods" they would be sick for a lot longer. The reason Caleb kept getting sick after his initial bout was because of too much bread and pasta. Once I cut it all out, he was fine.

I hope your little girl gets better soon!

Thank you so much for this discussion Katrina. I was going crazy thinking my kids were having a bad reaction to a recent switch to Silk soy milk. I thought what have I done to them!

We are in Alabama. A week ago one of our twins started throwing up each night for four nights in a row at 10 pm on the dot then as mysteriously as it started it was gone. Now the other twin has started the same thing (a full week latter) but chose her time to be midnight each night. They have also had some really horrid smelling diapers! And the same wierd smell to the vomit as most of you have described. Also my four year old son has had the horrible bm's with his bottom really hurting/burning afterward. The only thing that helps his bottom is Nystatin creme leading me to think yeast overgrowth in their tummy is the culprit but how and why? Can a virus cause issues with yeast or cause a change in the flora in their tummy? I'm pushing the yogurt and giving them probiotic chewables and other advice?

Maybe some sort of chemical contaminate found its way into the food supply of some giant food manufacturer or other and this is the result, sort of like rather than an acute reaction to some strong agent, a subtler one (vomiting) on account of whatever mystery agent being diluted in massive processing.

Something like this wouldn't surprise me in the least, nor will it in the future.
