Has happened to this Tribe? When I first came here, a few years ago there were SO SO many people sharing ideas, thoughts & modalities. So much knowledge and depth. I come here now and see a sad drop in how many people post back to topics, some of our brightest people seem to have disappeared or gone radio silent and the offering of thoughts and opinions is down, dare I say about 70% from just 18 months ago.

What has happened? Where are all of the wonderful thinkers and lifers?

I miss you

Alot of people have moved onto facebook. For a while Tribe was down every other day. I guess they got tired of trying to sign in.

Unfortunately, Facebook doesn't allow for this kind of communication.

What's been happening is that the people who are managing Tribe now have focused a lot of time and money on getting the hardware back to operational (I'm friends with some of them so I got to hear the story as equipment got bought and installed). The place was a mess, with a tremendous amount of malfunctioning equipment and problems with the software (which are harder to fix than replacing the expensive hardware). It almost folded in November when ad revenue disappeared and there was all that Oct/Nov down time. The new management stepped in somewhere after that- they weren't involved in the old downtime.

At this point they've got a solid plan, and are putting the pieces back together.

The next step, which I dont think we'll see the results of for another year, is to re-write the software and give us a totally new format of Tribe with modern features. In the meantime they're working on some little changes, still working on the hardware issues and are slowly modernizing the equipment that needs it, are much more responsive to user complaints/bugs/problems than previous management ever was, and are able to deal with bugs as they come up. They can't drastically change the current software at this time, for a large number of technical and business agreement reasons unfortunately.

These folks really have good heads on their shoulders, though, are very much from the kinds of alternative communities that Tribe spawned/was part of in the past, and have a ton of business experience, so I think that what they're planning is really going to work well.

Personally I think that people will get tired of Facebook one-liner updates and Tribe doesn't really 'compete' with that kind of social networking because it's still primarily about 'real' content, with many kinds of discussions about many kinds of interests all in one place. Just hang in there for a while, I think it'll come back in a big way once all site operation is stable, which is just a matter of replacing all the flakey hardware- something that they've done a lot of already.

          Katrina,

what WE can do is continue to show up!

And post and reply and keep things moving. We all do, and then tribe will be recovered.

I know that in the past there were a lot of promises from former management , about repairs, new features, etc. Right now, though, it's a totally different group of people and they're putting their money where their mouth is about the coming renewal of Tribe.

hoinestly, the funkiness of Tribe.net is like so much of the other stuff in my retro life that it makes me feel more at home here.

sometimes I thinki those of us who were first- or even second-wave hippies, back to the land-ers etc are hilariious...we lived without phones, TVs, sometimes without underweaer or socks, if we had cars at all they often didn;t start or dropped a part or two on a trip to town...and now we get all buggered when our computer connection s too slow or the loal bank ATM is out of service.

frustrated? sure sometimes, but my belpoved teenaged KID isn;t a;ways on call at home when I want her, why should my favorite online community be anyn more predictable?

heh. keeps us a little more honest; when you can;t get online with your cyber-pals, get out and enjoy nature.

I'm picking cherry plums for a disabled woman here n berkeley tomorrow and making jam with them at night, how 'bout you?

"our power went out for a couple days and it was GREAT! "

for a great cheap thril:l turn out the lights whether or not the power is out during a thumderstorm. lie comfortably on your bed, or I guess sit with a cup of tea or cocoa or something you already made when the storm started - watch the light show from the comfort of your own home!

better than TV, I promise. a good old-fashioned sound and light show.

it;s been years since I had the chance but making love with a thunbderstorm outside, or on a mountain behind you, is also wonderful.

nothing like a summer storm, but it works in winter too. just don;t go out while you still could be the lightning rod...

Facebook is only good for keeping up with your real world friends, imho. Tribe has the best message boards. I wouldn't post on facebook message boards because everyone I know and am related to is on there. Plus there are a lot of instigator type people posting on the boards I've gone to there. Tribe is the best!

yes! facebook was nice for a minute or two as lost friends became found again... but tribe rules for discussion, period.
