Making Homemade Shaving Cream?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has ever found a book discussing how commercial-like shaving creams can be easily made at home? I'm talking about the sort that you can squirt out of a bottle like a gel and lathers up very slightly. You see, I'd like to make both my brother and my dad some homemade lavender shaving cream: my brother's birthday and father's day both occur in June. I figured it would be a great gift for them both. hell, I can't imagine any man (regardless of which direction he "swings") who wouldn't get even mildly aroused by the beautiful scent of lavender--it's like a really awesome cologne to me (somewhat like "Eternity"). 'Course, I prefer Provencal lavender, myself. This is another reason why, to me, I associate lavender with love spells of a more intimate nature. :o) Ah...l'amour!

Take care,
Wade

actually lavender may be a mild aphrodesiac, as much as we really classify things that way in 'western' medicine. I think I saw some study to that effect.

but as to shaving cream-there's propellant in the can. I think maybe you could use a whipped cream dispenser and whip-its (or whatever they're called) to propell some homemade soapy version. You'd start with a soap-based recipe and get the whip-it to turn it into a nice foam. I'd recommend trying out the Trader Joe's shea butter soap as an experiment- it foams like CRAZY, that's one of the shea butter properties- and it's a very "shaving cream" sort of texture. The TJ's stuff is scented already, you might want to look for a source of unscented shea butter soap to make the actual gifts- but you'll get the idea of whether or not it'd work as a base.

I'd shave it in a food processor or by hand on a grater, then add water, let it soak till it makes a gel, and then see if you can figure out a way to propel it. Scenting a similar product should be easy and fun.
