Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 12:54 PMStretch and breathe slowly, deliberately and thoroughly in combination with what you are already doing.
If it persists, go to a massage therapist of some sort as the extra hands from a different angle will aid your efforts in recovering.

Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 1:04 PMIf you have access to a chinese pharmacy or similar healing venue, Schleffera Arbicola sold as a tablet called 'Qi ye lian", that not only is a pain releiver for acute back pain, but it increases dramatically, the circulation to the hurt area. its circulation and oxygen that helps with the pain- so its healing, not masking a symptom. I know some who use it with ibuprophen, but i dont know about that part or not.

Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 1:35 PMjust working on 6 weeks of herniated disc and torn back ligament therapy. still not 100% but --
- stretching bad, ice good - 20 mins every hour. moist heat after 1-2 weeks.
- ibuprofen, up to 800mg every 6-8 hours if/when needed
- rest rest rest. NO SITTING, lay flat on back with knees raised slightly
- take omega oils supplements & drink lots of h2O
- walk a lot on flat surfaces, no uneven terrain or hiking
- re-learn how to use subtle deep lower abdominal muscles ie core/pilates
keep your spirits up! yes it sucks but you will heal; have intention to heal!
time, patience, consciousness in the body when you do everything will all help your healing. -

Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 1:59 PMoh so yeah this is the herbal meds tribe duh, and I see I wrote Ibuprofen above> and what I really meant was
- Zyflamend (or any systemic herbal anti-inflammatory) and some topical Traumed. the key is to remove/prevent inflammation from further damaging your tissues. the ice helps with this as well. -

Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 2:48 PMSorry to hear about your pain! I'm a massage therapist, and I highly recommend you get bodywork from someone who knows what they're doing. It sounds like you need work on your psoas muscle, illiacus muscle, and sacroiliac joint. They should work all around the area- the hips and glutes- first. Don't do any work on areas that still feel hot and inflamed. Definitely ice- 20 minutes on, then take off and let it come to room temp, do it again at least twice.
Be very aware of any compensating you are doing regarding your posture; those compensations will manifest as sore muscles and problems with the other side. You should have both sides released by a massage therapist.
Arnica will help the healing and relieve some pain, and when the inflammation has gone down you can do a hot castor oil pack once a day for an hour to hasten healing. Make sure you ice after. -

Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 3:18 PMCottonwood contain sacycilates(sp.) the stuff that is in aspirin.
Pain relieving and healing.....wildly potent and spiritual healing as well...helping to release fear
and replace it with inspiration....I wouldn't use so much over the counter pain meds unless you need to sleep.
I think it stops us from feeling, numbs the senses and then, down the road we get hurt again because that issue
that was nagging at us returns again to say, "When are you going to listen to me."
A wonderful teacher of mine, Donald Epstein says, "You can't heal it until you can feel it."
Peace, Julie -

Re: acute back pain care
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 7:28 PMWith Cottonwood, it is a good time to collect in some places....not yet here in Wisconsin. And I concur, that cottonwood is a great pain reliever. I also like to combine arnica with St Johnswort, as St Johnswort has antiinflamtory properties.
One of the ways I like to work with this type of injury is to lay on the floor or other comfortable place and free associate...having images, words, ideas arise. I don't attach to anything just see what is there. Then I move about and see if I notice those images words etc anywhere else in my life. It is amazing the information and patterns that reveal themselves through this process.
Do be gentle and kind with yourself. These things do not happen because we are bad or don't deserve something. They happen because we are alive and the universe is rather chaotic. If you discover patterns, they are not good or bad, they simply offer information to work with. While you are healing you may enjoy reading the beginning of Susun Weed's book Healing Wise. You may find the informaiton about different approaches to healing modalities and the thinking behind them to be thought provoking.
Blessings

This is such good advice. Being gentle and compassionate with one's self when recovering from an injury is SO important...

Re: acute back pain care
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 8:56 AMI have a rather lengthy write up on using herbs to treat spinal injuries here:
www.herbcraft.org/backpain.html
I think its about 20 pages, if you cut and paste it to a word document. It gives a perspective on how to choose from among the many indicated remedies, and the considerations for the many issues often at play.
Having had a herniated disc in addition to working a lot with this issue in clients, its all based on first hand experience.
