i have systemic yeast infections. i have a bad one right now. i chopped up some garlic and placed it inside with some yogurt. now i am reading that it is bad to chop it, and that i should put a whole clove in cloth with a string-etc.
my question is will the chopped garlic harm me? will it eventually fall out or should i get it out now?

Hi Ceanna. You don't have to accept the problem as your fate. Here's a link to give you an idea of a effective approach; acupuncture.com/newsletter...4/main2.htm Large doses of MSM taken internally will kill a yeast infection and detoxify at the same time. I'd start at about 8 grams a day and after about 3 days increase it to 16 grams a day for about two weeks. This is a regimen I recently learned from another health practitioner. Many people have used MSM but, most people have never used enough to really help them. There is Para Mune + by SGS Research. Cranberry extract capsules seem to work in the short term. Doing a gallbladder flush is supposed to be the best way of preventing fungus infections from returning. The appendix can then repopulate the intestines with bacteria. You might want to try a fungal cream like Monistat and follow it up with alternative medicine. Aloha, kahuna Lamaku. P.S.- I got this off of the internet. Good luck; Peel a clove of garlic and insert in vagina about a fingers length in. Place in new garlic clove before bed. Do this for 3 or 4 days. To remove just push hard like your taking a bowel movement. This works every time :)

the reason that you are supposed to leave it whole is that less of the volatile oils will touch the delicate mucous membranes of your vagina, as garlic can be a strong healer. you would feel the "burn" of the garlic if it was too strong for you, but I would believe that since you put it in yogurt it has been coated in a milder and helpful medium, and you will probably be alright. trust your feelings and maybe remove it earlier than you would have removed a whole clove, then go from there based on how you actually feel.

systemic yeast is very tricky, and does not just manifest in vaginal yeast infections - you should eliminate all sugars from your diet to really help your system - this includes processed flours and fruits and fruit juices.

lamaku - I had not heard of cranberry for yeast, but I do know for sure that Unsweetened cranberry juice will knock out bladder infections quite readily and easily.

from what i know, you are supposed to leave it whole and perhaps wrap it with gauze and tie a string to it..this you can do at night and duringthe day you're supposed to insert either acidophillus caps or yogurt...i sympathize with you darling i've been there...try also taking a bath with some raw apple cider vinegar in there...like a cup or so...

thanks you guys. i did the garlic in gauze (well a tea bag gauze) last night before bed, added a bit of yogurt. left it in overnight, actually helped tremendously! i took the garlic pieces out soon after the post, didn't feel safe. i inserted a probiotic, then a few hourse later did the garlic in gauze (before bed). one of my teachers of ayurved suggests licorice tea douche, i just tried it in the shower, we'll see what happens. i'll probably insert another probiotic (with a little yogurt), before bed.
sigh chronic candidiasis has been a serious problem, luckily it manifests physically so i can try to heal it. my cravings for sugar are immense, but yes i reduce it as much as possible, as well at breads, yeasty stuff, and fruit/fruit juice. thank you all.

Whoops. Here I am again. I've been looking into an herb called neem. Here's a link you should check out. There is a section on candida. Sometimes candida thrives because other parasites exist alongside it. www.neemgenie.co.uk/pages/treatments.htm Neem can help with both. I use neem in capsule form. It seems to be good for almost everything. Not for children under 12, pregnant woman or very weak people. Up up and away!, Lamaku.

You can also put 5 drops of sandlwood and 6 drops of lavender essential oil on a tampon and insert. I like this combo, it rids of the yeast and makes the yoni smell good!

sandalwood doesnt irritate like you may think. it does not burn my urethra, and i have had occasion to place some that way myself. it is truly amazing for all afflictions of the genital areas. as with all oils tho, one should try a tiny bit, for sensetivity before going full bore. The neem that was mentioned would be good too, but it stinks.
        • Re: does it burn??

          Tue, May 6, 2008 - 12:42 PM
No, the sandalwood doesn't burn, like other oils (tea tree, eucalyptus...) I find the sandalwood to be very soothing in fact. Garlic is way more able to "burn" than sandalwood. Like mentioned before, try a little bit to see how it feels.
Also, I recommend taking more alkaline foods for example, lemon water first thing in the morning, more salads and greens, avoid sugars (especially sweet fruits like bananas), avoid coffee, bread, cheese. I like quinoa as my grain of choice with salad wrapped in nori seaweed, a bit of olive oil and lemon.....yummmy!! Good luck, sista

May sound funny, but boric acid will treat the vaginal infection (for systemic stuff you need to go the whole hog and do a diet resembling the candida diet).

I actually learned this from planned parenthood of all places and it worked! They had me fill a capsule with half boric acid and half acidophilus, and then insert. Now I just put the boric acid in straight any time I smell a little off--works like a charm. Acidifies the environment so that yeast and harmful bacteria cannot thrive.

eriol, i have tried boric acid, the ones from tori hudson. they didnt seem to do much for me for some reason. maybe it is the formula? how do you make the capsule? and where would you get powdered acidophilis or boric acid?

Hi Ceanna. Do they use baking powder? They would have to use a lot of it. Manna bread is yeast free but, you cannot use it to make sandwiches. It is delicious however. In general, grains will encourage yeast growth. Amaranth being an exception which actually kills candida. Fat from roasted nuts will help kill your appetite. Beets are sweet but, will still help with candida as it helps the immune system and liver function. Steamed with butter is wonderful. IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate) is another supplement to look into. Aloha, kahuna Lamaku.

Aloha Ceanna~ The yeast-free breads are good, although your body still may react to the spelt (it does contain small amounts of gluten). Try going without it for a few days and then reintroduce it back into your diet and see how you respond. I like sprouted breads (mana bread, or sprouted tortillas).

I read this posting and all of the replies yesterday because I am suffering from a yeast infection and don't want to to use OTC drugs to get rid of it. After reading about the boric acid, I went to Taos Herb Company and bought some plus the capsules. I inserted two suppositories vaginally and went to bed. Almost immediately I noticed a leakage coming from my vagina. It was almost a constant, steady flow of liquid coming out. It didn't smell, nor was it thick, rather it was clear and watery. I kept having to put toilet paper between my legs so I wouldn't wet my bed. What is this? Has anyone had this reaction before? Please help because I don't know if I should use the suppositories again tonight. Thanks!

for yeast infections in general i always start with bee balm-- monarda fistola...the purple kind.
it tastes great and works! teas or tincture. for tea use a handful of herb to a pint of water, drink a quart a day.
a sitz bath is good too, in soothing herbs, chamomile? and beebalm to treat.
for systemic infections, i am really just guessing that this means chronic, maybe in the blood.....ceanna have you tried clearing things with a long term treatment of burdock???
really it is a thorough herb, just takes FOREVER to do it's magic. at least a month or preferring two after your symptoms have cleared. good luck to both of you.
mariposa, i hope someone answers you! that sounds unnerving, maybe good, maybe bad....unnerving until you know what is going on though!

boric acid works great~ and is really inexpensive if you make your own capsules.
yup, the leakage is normal... wear a pad overnight.

careful about putting anything irritating or rough inside you (gauze, tampons, essential oils, garlic), the skin in there is sensitive & it can make it worse. ouch!

for systemic healing, make sure you're not allergic or sensitive to any foods you're eating... wheat & dairy are the main culprits. Also, eliminate sweets, booze & caffeine.

also, get some real kefir grains & make your own kefir~ this has helped me a lot.

There's a difference between systemic yeast infections, and vaginal...although they may be related.

Garlic works great for systemic when taken by mouth in capsule form (Kyolic is my favorite brand). Or go to the antipasto bar at the local grocery store and load up on roasted garlic...I did an accidental yeast cleanse that way when I had a craving for roasted garlic a few years ago.

For vaginal yeast infections, the remedy that works best for me is boric acid capsules. Go to the health food store and buy some of those clear celluose capsules. Gelatin capsules will work, too, but cellulose seem to melt better. I think the size is 0 or 00.

Fill them with powdered boric acid. Insert 2 capsules in the vagina for the first night, then the following morning. Push them as high up as you can get them. It may sting a little at first because the tissues are inflamed. Be sure to wear a pad. Then use 1 capsule in the vagina in the morning and at bedtime for the next 3 days.

NOTE: DO NOT TAKE THEM BY MOUTH...THEY WILL MAKE YOU VERY SICK THAT WAY.

The way it works is two-fold. First, the boric acid makes the vagina inhospitable to the yeast because it is acidic. Second, it makes the vaginal lining moist...kind of like a slightly runny nose...which washes the yeast out of your vagina.

I think I first read about this in one of Susun Weed's books. I've used it for years, and it always clears up an infection quickly.

CAUTION: More is not better with this remedy. Don't use the 2 capsules longer than the first day and night.

    Good luck.

A couple other things- how many capsules of acidophilis should you take daily while having the vaginal yeast infection? And a lot of sources say douching may be one of the causes, though of course a lot of other sources say douching-- with the right substance-- is healthy. Thoughts?

just use capsules katrina. they do make "000" size caps.

or, alternatively, you can dissolve it a bit of distilled h20, and use as a liquid if you want. It depends on what is unfomfortable for yourself.

It's a powder. You scoop some up in a capsule and close up the capsule, then insert. The capsule melts and later the stuff drips out. I've found that it's less messy than over-the-counter creams and suppositories. It doesn't stain, though the boric acid will re-crystalize so you'll have a weird-looking white powder in your pants if it's soaked through your underwear or whatever.

I've also used acidophilus as a suppository occasionally (like someone suggested in this thread). It really caused a funny problem once as it turned out that the particular capsule was 'enteric coated' and didn't dissolve. All the empty capsules you can buy seem to be gelatin or veggie gelatin, though, and those work fine as suppositories.

Cut out sugars as much as possible and even bread, grains, starch, etc. It makes a huge difference.

For systemic yeast, there's a good diet (and lots of crap for sale, which you can find elsewhere) at wholeapproach.com. The recipe forums at wholeapproachforums.com are great if you take the plunge into cutting out carbs hardcore to help with a systemic condition.

Incidentally I stopped having yeast infections after getting onto an immune modulator (prescription low dose naltrexone, which does something similar to herbal adaptogens). I've been on antibiotics (which cause candida) for over a year now and to not have a candida problem (and I'm not religiously following my low-carb diet either) while on antibiotics is very odd. It underscores to me that candida is sometimes linked to other issues with the immune system and the body.

candida is indeed linked to some immune disorders, hiv being a good example. Girl Mark, do you know about any interactions with naltrexone, by protease inhibitors for hiv infections? Could you compare its effect to some adaptogens, so i 'get a feel' for what you mean?
i regulated alot of oral yeast infection with bit of kombochu tea regularly, silver, molybydenum, zinc, selenium colloidals, and tea of chinese smoked plums (wu mei) (umboshi), or a bit of the paste. gargling or brushing with triphala combination is also excellent, as well as using it internally.

Hmmm. I actually don't follow the LDN (low dose naltrexone) 'community' so I'm not sure what happens when people on HIV meds take it. I just know what some other Lyme patients have to say about it, which is a different set of immune system issues, often involving some inflammation and some autoimmune effects along with suppression of some other immune functions, rather than just suppression of various immune function.

I think that some adaptogens like eleuthero, schizandra, etc essentially help re-orchestrate some of your immune function (perhaps not in an immune system disease like HIV but probably with other less severe imbalances). The idea is that this effect reins in some overactive inflammatory products of the immune system and raises production of other immune system chemicals if they are depressed for some reason.

I think there's been a lot of research on this in the past (such as all the Russian research on eleuthero in the 1960's including very long-range studies on thousands of people) and much of it shows that people fend off seasonal colds and flu better after a period of time taking adaptogens, and withstand stress (like loud/stressful work environments) and are in measurably better immune function.

I have held up to colds and flu better when on adaptogens. My only major noticable LDN success, and it's a huge one, is the fact that I stopped getting frequent yeast infections when I went on it, and that seems to change whenever I get off of it for a few weeks. the additional interesting thing about eleuthero specifically is that I htink it raises adrenal function, which is a fairly specific effect to think about when assessing it's effects. You may have more energy for reasons other than immune ones.

I think that even for people who don't have serious immune system 'diagnoses' like HIV or Lyme, a serious problem with recurring candida may indicate that some kind of immune system function is out of balance. That's assuming that bad diet isn't the problem.

I also did some reading trying to find what info exists about passing vaginal candida back and forth among hetero sex partners (or toys for that matter). There was a small study that showed that instead there was a small correlation between recurring candida and people who used saliva as lube during parter or solo sex, which I thought was interesting. Some lubes that contain glycerine (which many do) can irritate some people's bodies and promote candida. I think I heard (didnt' read anything to confirm) that vaginal candida overgrowth is made worse if you've got vaginal irritation for some other reason, such as poor lubrication (and candida leads to poor lubrication, itself) so I think these are all issues to consider for women who get recurring vaginal candida. Since men often dont' show symptoms, some people suggest that vaginal candida that's resistant to treatment may sometimes be a re-infection of a female by her male sex partner, and I' ve heard of doctors treating both partners with systemic antifungals sometimes when this sort of recurrance despite treatment occurs. Or, of course, using condoms and thinking about whether the saliva issue is a factor may be helpful.

wow, thank you for the information. I like the different factors you cross compared here, it is a guide for research of my own. I deeply appreciate the time and depth you take to go into a matter. On a side note, (personal anecdote) when the strongest of hiv symtoms turned to aids directly- wasting of flesh, profound lack of energy, unable to eat food, and in this case tenui (akin to rigor mortis in live tissue). I learned my tonic herbalism the direct route, by strong single concotions, like Li-Shen was reputed to do, to investigate the properties of any given medicine. So the short of it - when ones tongue learns to deal with the varied flavors of medicine - so that one relates to it as food - (unable to bend, was bedbound, and took hours to get to the bathroom) - i found that in review, i realized my body developed an inordinate desire to eat schizandra - despite the strong tartness. When a friend ups'ed me a pound of schizandra - within 3 hours of ingestion, i could get to the bathroom much faster. within 9 hours i could bend at the waist. 3 days later, i was allowed to go home, and walk of my own accord. After that, i followed up with contraband musk compound pills for cleaning filth from the passages. It literally saved my carcass, and gave me back life. That was before the advent of protease inhibitors and such. For the right person, at the right time, there are some plants, that indeed, have a very strong and benign influence on hiv. This is one of the reasons i do not like blanket statements about hiv and immunology - the argument about white blood cells. The real deal (i feel) is like someone said today - its a back and forth balance, always striving to stay in balance - and getting a feel for alternating ones treatments, and short term use of some things, and maintennace with others.

Use the powdered form of boric acid...you can buy it at just about any drug store.

Get empty cellulose or gelitan capsules from the health food store.

Scoop the powder into the capsule and close them up.

Insert the capsule, pushing them up as far as you can reach.

well I am still a firm believer in the garlic clove wrapped in cheese cloth or gauze with a string around it at night and yogurt of acidophillus during the day....this has to be done for days not one or two days...also the baths in raw apple cider vinegar are amazing. on the other hand, I would like to point out that there is a connection between the mind and body as we all know and that having yeast infections is linked to denying your own needs and not supporting the self...just something to think about...
as for the post above, a natural remedy for external yeast infection would be raw apple cider vinegar applied topically and drink internally...our skin/nails etc are a reflection of the conditions going on inside our bodies as well....tea tree oil DILUTED has been known to help also.

I second the apple cider vinegar for external infections. Yeast cannot live in a highly acidic environment.

Apple cider vinegar is the equivalent of duct tape...it does a bunch of good stuff, and doesn't cost much. ; )

Externally or internally it would do the trick.
