Infant Inner Ear Infection

My 4 month old, breast fed daughter somehow has an inner ear infection. She was congested the first couple months of life but not anymore. She will not swallow the anti biotics and I honestly am not too keen on giving them to her. She's been pulling on the ear for a couple weeks and goes through bouts of pain w it but not constant.

Doc said it wasn't a terrible infection but that if it was going to go away it would have done so in the first day or two of onset. I realized this morning that laying down and nursing at night without burping may be a culprit so I'm going to stop that & c if this clears up. Doc says nothing applied externally will clear up an inner ear infection since the fluid is behind the ear drum, trapped. Thoughts? Agree/Disagree?

Anything I can do to help her heal w/out the pink cure all? Anything I can eat and nurse to her which can help her? Any idea helps me to get my head around this. Thanks!

warm moist compresses over the ear/side of the head can really help with pain and infection.

do u know, since it's inner ear and doesn't drain out, if i should have her sleep on the infected ear or the other side? ( i was leaning towards the other side to keep any pressure off the ear.. not sure tho)

thanks for the warm compress idea.. it's always a pain in the rear to keep the towel warm for longer than a minute or two tho..ideas on how to keep it warm longer??

there's an old home remedy - my grandma used it on my mom, and I;ve used it with mychild, who has been prone to ear infections - heat sea salt in the oven and pack int a cotton sock or a muslin sack. the salt holds the ehat for a while, and many doctors believe that the increased salinity helps deal with infection. it really feels good. the membrane that makes up the eardrum in somewhat permeable, so warm salty air will have some effect on which as 'deep" to the eardrum - this is the same logic to sing mullein infused oil i the ear.

now holding a compress on the ear on an infant or toddler is a job! I tend to want to sleep with the aching ear down, partly for insulation when I have an earache (I was plagued with ear infections as a child too. lost my tonsils to it around age 5 - they used to do tonsillectomy fr nearly everything - my mother thinks it improved things significantly, I'm not so sure.)

I'm not sure of your daughter's diet; exclusive breastfeeding? taking formula or solid food? even with children who are not truly "allergic" soemtimes cows milk, especially cold fluid milk, seems to irritate the immune system in other ways that can manifest in blocked ears. you may want to cut out dairy products, or eliminate our own use of them while nursing, at least for the duration of the ear infection.

the ear tubes (Eustacian tubes) are close to horizontal in babies and become more vertical as we get older, so the fluid drains more easily and ear infections become less common.

I;e used echinacea tincture very successfully as an antibiotic alternative for ear infections. I have a specific regiment for using echinacea effectively; let me know if you want the details (if you are already familiar with good effective uses for echinacea, I won't bore you.)

PS just saw you sound like you are an exclusively breastfeeding mother - good! you might want to increase the raw garlic in your diet as long as you and your daughter tolerate it well. in some studies, they've found that garlic in mom's diet increases baby's nursing and seems to make the milk taste more palatable to many babies. the more she can nurse, the more she an work at clearing her ears any way...

if the garlic seems to make your baby gassy to where she is more uncomfortable, it's not the best food-medicine for ehr, but it;s generally worth a try.

            Judith,

I just started eating more garlic again and honestly, I wonder if it has some natural antibiotics that get through to the milk because when I thought about what I started doing differently, I realized that I haven't eaten as much raw garlic (almost none) in the past two weeks and I started eating dairy again. Coincidentally around the time of the onset of the ear infection. I also started breastfeeding her at a more upward tilt in hopes that may help with fluid not getting trapped where it shouldn't.

Yeah, she seems to have always done real well with raw garlic. I'll start eating more of it again! Thanks Judith

            K

boost your immune syst, put some breast milk in the ear, just a lil bit and a piece of raw garlic w/ some cotton(not too tiny that it can be absorbed into the ear)
you can also make garlic olive oil and put a few drops in her ear.
cut the following from your diet till at least a week after she is all better:
              dairy
              alcohol
caffeine(maybe a lil green or white if u must)
              fruit
              red meat
              sweet citrus

              blessings for a speedy recovery!

Hello! I just recently wrote this post in the Breastmilk thread:
It can't hurt, so why not give it a try??

Once when my son seemed to have an earache, I squirted some milk in that ear. He was shocked at the weird sensation, but after he calmed down from the initial surprise, he showed no sign of discomfort after that.
He was prone to diaper rash, and I found it helped to spray him down after a diaper change and let the milk dry on his skin before putting on a new diaper.

Check out this wild article from Mothering Magazine:

"Breastmilk is sterile, antibacterial, and has many healing properties. It can be used to treat a variety of ailments and can be applied topically for eye and ear infections, minor skin injuries, sore or cracked nipples, diaper rash, sore throats, and stuffy noses."

                    Hi Fix it Fox!

I did read that. I wasn't sure if I should trust myself with that because it's inner ear and not outer.. I did try it a couple of times but she didn't seem to like it much and it ended up crystallizing in the outer ear much like sugar water would. I just wasn't sure if I should keep doing it. I never ended up giving her the anti biotics and the infection seems to be clearing up on it's own. She's not pulling at them anymore. I quit nursing laying down for a few days and started eating differently. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

                    Thank you for sharing Fox

you might try taking some probiotics as well. it is basically the good bacteria that comes from yogurt but much higher potency. take it at opposite times of day from the garlic since garlic working as a natural antibiotic will kill the probiotics if taken within two-three hours of each other. Probiotics help to boost the immune system and help with digestive issues. The K. Salivarius strain specifically is good for kids as it targets bacteria in the ears. You can take a higher dose so your baby can get it through the breast milk and they also sell probiotics dosed for infants. Good luck!
