How do you know?

If it's swine flu, or 'just' a virus?
I've been sick for 5 days - definitely on the mend. Lower respiratory at this point, but my 101.2 degree fever on Friday night makes it not 'just' a cold.
Now my husband is feeling ill, and HE has some other health conditions that makes this possibility more scary.
I'm not prone to panic, but at what point do I insist on medical intervention? And what good would it do? Is there different treatment for swine flu, vs. our normal symptom treatment? Rest, fluids, horrible tasting but effective herbal concoctions?
191 cases in Calif as per WHO report this morning.

You can always go to the doctor. If an emergency, you are where you need.

If not, you can choose to avail yourself of their reccomendations, or discharge yourself /himself, if it does not make sense to you. A doctor is just someone to consult. They are a tool. Not god. Use them with respect, and a dose of salt. But you are your life's manager, no one else.

you are free to pick and choose from ALL available input and treatments. consulting a natropathic doctor is a good middle ground. my 2 cents anyway. :)

      That is great advise!!

For years I have gone to my Dr. for my thyroid the right side was removed due to cancer
every time I go (once a year) to test levels. he says are you taking your Thyroid I say the dosage is to high
it gives me a throbbing in my carotid artery and drives me nuts so I take it until my body starts doing the throb
thing and back off a day or two. My levels are never good enough for him. Yet I feel fine. Again this year he
started upping my dosage again. Its like he does not write this shit down in my chart. One year I had to remind
him what side he took out.

      (shake head)

Well, I got other answers from other sources, but I wasn't really asking should I go to a doctor.
I guess I was really asking:
How important is it to actually KNOW if I had the HN1 whatever - (formerly swine) flu or not. I was sick, now I'm getting better. My husband is now as sick as I was, but he's got diabetes and heart conditions; is he more likely to respond to treatment specifically for that strain of flu, or should I just take care of him like I always do? Does it matter? - as long as he doesn't develop a secondary infection? Which sometimes he does whenever he gets sick from any source, and sometimes he doesn't.

Doctors... yeah. I've worked for enough of them to know they are only people - people who haven't lived in MY body as long as I have, and if one of them starts to tell me that I'm wrong or discounts something that feels important to me from the inside, I go find another one. Thankfully - my insurance 'lets' me do that. I'm having issues getting to the bottom of some mystifying symptoms that my uninsured daughter's experiencing in that regard. When will health CARE be more important than how much you can pay?
But that's another rant for another day ......

          Here's my $0.02 worth....

I'd say overall, the significant benefit to you and yours would be if a culture came up hot for H1N1 and they started him on (assuming he'd be interested in them) antivirals.

Could the community as a whole benefit if it is proved to be Swine Flu, well, maybe. The more that is known about it and who/how it spreads, the more that can be done to fight it. Of course their is the whole life-under-the-microscope but most would prefer that to life 6 feet under.

getting the current "version" of H1N1 wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing....but I'll keep my Scientist Husbands opinions to myself :)

seriously, though, if you are stressing out about it, just go to the doctor

            that was my $0.0005 worth

well, I *was* stressing when burning and miserable with fever on Friday night, and the prospect of a much anticipated and now ruined weekend, and the unknown of how much sicker could I get, but now that I'm well on the mend, I'm not so worried.
              Just speculation on others opinions.
I'm too busy taking care of my honey to panic about pandemic annihilation. Summer's coming up and West Nile virus is still out there, too. One superbug at a time please? LOL
